Recipe Name: Tamarind Chutney or Puli Inji (in Tamil)

Serves: 4

  • 400 gms tamarind (soaked in 3 glasses of water/ approximately 1 litre)
  • 200 gms jaggery
  • 200 gms ginger (finely chopped)
  • 250 gms green chillies (finely chopped)
  • 15-20 curry leaves
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 3 tbsp coconut oil

How to cook?

  1. Strain the pulp out of tamarind water and keep it aside.
  2. Heat coconut oil in a pan.
  3. Add mustard seeds and allow it to crackle.
  4. Add green chillies, ginger and curry leaves and saute it till the raw smell of ginger is gone.
  5. Add turmeric powder and saute it for another one minute.
  6. Add the tamarind water and jaggery.
  7. Allow it to boil. Stir the mixture often till the liquid become thick.
  8. Switch off the stove.
  9. Serve with dosas.
