Recipe Name: Dal Fry

Serves: 4

  • 3/4 cup mixed lentils (chana dal, split udad dal, moong dal, tuvar dal, masoor dal)
  • 1 large onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 medium tomatoes (finely chopped)
  • 2 tbsp ghee
  • 1 tsp ginger (grated)
  • 1 tsp garlic (finely chopped and crushed)
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 piece cinnamon
  • 3 green chillies (slit)
  • 2 red chillies
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp coriander powder
  • a pinch of asafoetida
  • 2 tbsp coriander leaves
  • Salt to taste

How to cook?

  1. Pressure cook the lentils in 2 cups of water.
  2. Heat ghee in a pan.
  3. Add cumin seeds, bay leaf and cinnamon and saute till the cumin seeds crackle.
  4. Add onions and stir-fry it till it becomes pink and soft.
  5. Add ginger, garlic, green chillies and red chillies and saute it till the raw smell of ginger and garlic goes off.
  6. Add tomatoes.
  7. Saute till the tomatoes turn soft.
  8. Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, asafoetida and salt and saute it for a minute.
  9. Add the cooked dal and cover it with lid and leave it in a medium flame for about 15 minutes till the dal becomes thick.
  10. Switch off the stove.
  11. Add coriander leaves.
  12. Serve hot with chapatis / rotis.
